As part of its Purpose:full  High Five Charity initiative, Roth Staffing Companies, L.P. recently wrapped up its YOU SHARE, KIDS READ campaign. Through Facebook and LinkedIn, users commented the title of their favorite children’s book, and Roth donated physical copies of the books to various children’s literacy programs across the nation through the “Books for Kids” organization. Overall, Roth donated over 150 hardbound books.

Books for Kids is a non profit organization that promotes literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children. Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and implements literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life.

As part of Roth’s 2015 High Five goals, Roth Staffing Companies has declared 5 social responsibility goals in conjunction with its Purpose:full charity initiative. One of Roth’s five goals is to spearhead national social media campaigns to raise awareness that effect children in the US, including literacy:

  • The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school.

National Commission on Reading

  • The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home.

The Literacy Crisis: False Claims, Real Solutions

  • 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have zero age-appropriate books for their children.

Neuman, Susan B. and David K. Dickinson, ed. Handbook of Early Literacy Research, Volume 2. New York, NY

  • 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children.

Reading Literacy in the United States

  • More than $2 billion is spent each year on students who repeat a grade because they have reading problems.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

In an effort to bring attention to childhood literacy in America, the You Share, Kids Read book drive posts reached more than 3,200 people, and generated more than 300 Likes, Comments, and Shares on Facebook. On LinkedIn the campaign generated more than 14,700 impressions and 130 interactions, totaling to more than 18,000 social impressions across platforms.
