You know it as the most boring part of PE, but now it can play an integral role in your health. Stretching isn’t just for the serious yogis, it’s for everyone. Daily stretching can:

  • Improve athletic performance
  • Decrease risk of activity-based injuries
  • Increase your range of motion through flexibility
  • Release tension, mentally and physically
  • Increase blood supply
  • Improve balance

You may think that exercise is enough, but it can actually make things worse if you don’t stretch. Your daily activity combined with your repetitive desk activities can take its toll on your body.

Here are a few stretches you can do in the office without looking like a crazy person:

Palms down

Stand up and place your wrists on the desk so they face away from you, and apply pressure until you feel the stretch.

Reach for the floor

Bend at the waist to touch your toes, a classic. If your lower back hurts, it’s most likely not your back – it’s probably your hamstrings. This is a great way to loosen up your hamstrings and the pressure on your back.

raise your arms above your head, interlock your fingers and push away from yourself. Mmm, feels nice doesn’t it?

Seated with your feet flat on the floor, knees together, place your left hand on your right knee and twist your entire upper body to the right, looking behind your shoulder. Hold, then twist back and repeat on the other side.

Bend your right knee and step straight back onto the ball of your left foot. Keep your hips forward and your back leg straight.

Don’t be afraid to lead your team or department in a daily stretch, it can benefit everyone and show your leadership abilities.

These exercises can help keep your body limber, while increasing your energy levels through an improved sense of invigoration. Even a short amount of time (10-15 minutes) of stretching can calm the mind, loosen up your body, and give your body a chance to recharge.
